I was not expecting this Japanese only PSP game to come out in 2025, complete with english voice-over. I've played a lot of it back then, so obviously it was a Day 1 purchase for me on Switch. This game uses the Ys VII engine and create a fighting game RPG hybrid that works really well in my opinion. Everything is so fast paced and the gameplay is just pure fun. As the title suggests you have a choice amongst Ys characters (almost all of them from Ys VII except for one) or Trails in the Sky characters, which was cool to see back then, seeing as they were getting 3D model for the first time in this game. You also have many modes including Story Mode, Arcade, Free Battles, a Shop, a character customization section and a Collection section which contains a treasure trove of Falcom stuff. The music in particular is not just Ys and Legend of Heroes. It covers the entire Falcom history which is awesome! In fact, the music may just be the REAL star of the game for me.
In any case, since its an RPG hybrid, you do actually level up your characters when playing, and you can buy and equip stuff too. But everything is just unlocking so fast, you're never getting bored in the grind. I don't know if there's a rank above what I've reached, but in 16 hours, I was able to reach LV99 with everyone, buy everything from the shop, beat Story and Arcade Mode with everyone. So while it's not the longest experience, it just brought a smile to my face all the way through. If you're a Falcom fan, this is a must!
